I was aware that there was some public backlash over the introduction of Nikki in season 3 as a potential love interest, and that thereon Mac's lovelife was either downplayed or dealt with past relationships only. Maria was probably the longest romantic relationship he had in those seven years (depending on the timeline set in The Negotiator with Deborah).
