It’s after their long marches back to the gate, debriefings given with tired breaths and grit still in their eyes, then a silent ride home with the car engine’s song for company. Colonel and Doctor are left behind in the mountain, when Jack and Daniel are alone. It’s where Daniel can give up the fight to save everyone, just for a little while, and Jack, waning from the adrenaline fuelled protective kick can just settle upon his protectee in the knowledge that he is safe, and warm, and loved.

The creaks of springs and knees are welcome friends in their solitude where their skin can enjoy the cool sweetness of soft sheets, and the warm hardness of one another in a melee of touch. The sanctuary of home.
