My fear with that scenario would be Atlantis becoming the Daniel & MacKay show. Especially in season 5 from what I recall of it, a lot of other characters were marginalised as the writers played out their self-insert fantasies with Rodney, and I feel that Rodney as Daniel's foil would not bring out the best in Daniel.
So I am kinda glad Jack kept Daniel so close at heart. *g*
