The gate is gatenapped, Daniel screws with the technician guys and then again with Jack, Teal'c is locked out of the house, and Sam develops a fondness for pleather. Then Sam is Samnapped, Daniel goes to her rescue, only to be shot 30 seconds after he arrives. Teal'c and friend go Tok'ra hunting and everyone suffers from unexplainable neck cramps and the call is out for an intergalactic chiropractor. Sam bluffs The Trust (irony, you haz it), Teal'c shows up with a big can o' whoop ass....and a staff weapon, shoots the baddies and SG-1 are beamed out just in time.

Leading lines:
The lines and text in the background lead towards the main subject (Teal'c).
When we look at an image, our eyes subconsciously enter from the top left hand corner. in this icon, the text carries your eye towards the arm, which is a line itself to the focal point.
Rule of Thirds:
Divide you image into a grid of 9 squares. Placing your main element on any of the four cross sections made by those grid lines gives the image an overall energy, a tension that would be lacking were the subject just plainly centered.
Framing:
Daniel and Sam frame the bottom and lower left edges of the image, the background texture frames them from the top and right for balance.
Rule of Odds:
This works on the believe that humans find subjects surrounded by an even number of other objects or interests pleasing to the eye. In this image the main subject Sam, is offset by the boldly coloured fence line behind her and the text.
Again, Jack's face is complimented by his hands in the foreground, and the word 'cookie?' behind him.
I found a great wikipedia article here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Composition_(visual_arts)) which pretty much explains all the composition tricks and elements of basic design.
After using these for so long, you just forget that you're using them. I certainly don't think about it consciously when making icons, but it's fairly easy to pick them out like this later on, heh.
You probably do this stuff already without even realising it! ;)
