Mac is in East Germany to bring a friend's grand daughter to America, but she hates him and then she doesn't, and then she is his grand daughter and then she isn't and then she is again. Also East German bad guys are after the grandfather's gold, but Mac escapes using gak. Early 90's technology proves to be quite ineffective for both sides, Mac is jumped by the grand daughter 20 years his junior over pizza, and toy soldiers are a painfully obvious metaphor.

for some reason, i was thinking of this episode the other day. and the fact that she seemed like she might be a sort-of love interest. and why they never had mac with a steady, or even semi-steady girlfriend. if that was public pressure on the writers like i've heard or RDA's idea, which i also heard.

I hadn't heard of RDA's involvement on that level before. I was aware that there was some public backlash over the introduction of Nikki in season 3 as a potential love interest, and that thereon Mac's lovelife was either downplayed or dealt with past relationships only. Maria was probably the longest romantic relationship he had in those seven years (depending on the timeline set in The Negotiator with Deborah).
