Oh Stargate, you're ignoring your most prevalent demographic under the outmoded assumption that the franchise is only watched by fapping little fanboys (apologies if you are, please go about your business), and your reliance on stereotypes and 'the Jack O'Neill mold' does not appeal to me (who is on the fringe of your target audience).

Colonel Everett Young. 40’s handsome, capable, former SG team leader.  Like the Jack O’Neill of ten years ago, but Young’s edges have tended to sharpen over time. He requested permission to serve the remainder of his commission on Earth upon marrying his wife, Hailey, two years ago, but for now he’s temporary commander of a secret off world base.  The loss of two members of his team several years ago has taught him never to take anything for granted, and be prepared for anything.  He stays on top of his team so they stay alive.

Tamara Johanson. 20-25. SGC Field medic, Captain grade. Off world experience. Beautiful, tough, smart, capable.  Paramedic level  training. Able to triage serious injury. Modest background. Dreamed of being a doctor but couldn’t afford medical school and the Air Force was her best option. She ends up being the most medically inclined person on the ship but is overwhelmed by the lack of knowledge and experience treating seriously wounded and ill patients. She also lacks the medicine and supplies and has to make do.

Cloe Carpenter.
20 ish. Stunning and sexy. Daughter of a U.S. Senator.  Silver spoon upbringing and a little spoiled but not stupid either. Politically and socially savvy. Dreams of following in her father’s footsteps but for now she’s a bit of a party girl in her first year at an Ivy League school. Her father’s tragic death and the  dire circumstances of being trapped on a spaceship seriously tests her character.

Eli Hitchcock. 20-25.  Total slacker. Utter genius. Mathematics, computers, anything he puts his mind to.  Acerbic sense of humor. A social outcast. Comes from a broken home. Lacks confidence because his true intelligence has never really been recognized like Matt Damon’s character from Good Will Hunting with a little Jack Black thrown in.

Lt. Jared Nash. 20-25. Junior SGC team member. Officer material but green and rough around the edges. Every teenage girl’s fantasy. Like a college quarterback thrown into his first pro game, he is thrust into the role of leader well before he’s  ready for the responsibility and must learn to take command, earn respect through action, and manage the diverse personalities on the  ship to keep everyone alive. Like Jason Bourne, he is skilled and well-trained but mentally unprepared for the urgency of the situation.

Ron “Psycho” Stasiak. 20.  Marine.  Big, strong, silent.  You want  him on your side. You don’t want him mad at you.  Lacks control over his temper in non combat situations.  His emotional expression ranges from sarcasm to anger.  His past is a mystery but it’s clear something dark formed the hard shell around him. Yet, there must also be some moral center because otherwise he’d kill everyone around him.  Think Eric Bana’s character  “Hoot” in Blackhawk Down.  Adam Baldwin at 20 could play him.

Ok, firstly - your typical all American leader. At first I assumed from the information available about Universe that he would be a Jack/Hammond amalgamation, a leader who stays behind while the youngin' all go off on their adventures, and then steps in when needed, but if they're getting a name star, they're going to want to utilise that actor, so we'll have to wait and see there.

Secondly - the team? Oh. Dear. God. Tamara Johanson - Um, Keller anyone? And can anyone with medical training or any idea tell me how long it actually takes to become a doctor? And why would they put an inexpeienced, unqualified medic out there anyway? Unless they were on a field trip or something and became stranded. on a three hour tour... Cloe Carpenter - ugh! I notice how the young ladies looks are listed here, but not the guys - you only let the pretty girls through the gate, but if you have a penis and gun, please step on through.

Eli Hitchcock - mini McKay. I can only assume he won't be military. Why do all the smart ones have to be a pain in the ass? I liked Sam Carter in the early years for a reason! Lt. Jared Nash - "Every teenage girl’s fantasy" *barf* And finally Ron "Psycho" Stasiak. This is what pissed me off. Now I pasted the character profiles here from Stargate Solutions, but Gateworld has listed next to his age 'all ethnicities'. Yes, because you white boy writers couldn't possibly understand what goes on in someone else's head, so you have to make them all mysterious and dangerous. Fuck off. They did this with Teal'c, with Teyla and Ronan, and in a way with Ford - oh he went crazy because of the wraith enzime, but McKay, no he can shoot up and make perfect sense. And if he's big, strong and silent, well then you don't have to think up any lines for him and he can stand right in the back there can't he?

Now when I first heard about Atlantis, I thought it had far more potential than what I am seeing here. Not that I'll see any of this for up to 2 years or so anyway, because sci fi doesn't get shit in Australia, but c'mon, it's like TPTB have ignored everything we - their audience - you know, the ones they thank for watching in the first place and making the show possible? have been saying the last 11 years, and they're trading us in for a new shiny audience who will only be half paying attention because they have headphones on listening to Miley Cirus while they read Twilight (appologies to my Twilight reading buddies, I'm just making a point, and I couldn't think of anything else the young people are reading :P)

I honestly don't know if I should give this show the time of day. If it were anything other than Stargate, I wouldn't blink an eye.

The only thing they're missing is the token alien for this to basically be Voyager.

*yawn*

Only if the alien is wearing a skintight leather bustier...

Judging from these 'character' recaps, I won't be watching this travesty.

It sounds like it might be worth watching, if only for the merciless sporking to follow.

Sporkings all well and good, but I'd much rather a good, well written show with a strong premise. :(

Flails in disbelief. But I'm looking forward to the aforementioned inevitable sporking.
Jeeze.
I am so over this show. Thank God for fic! (and the two eps of Daniel still to come. :-)) )

Sadly, I think I am too. Atlantis completely lost me after the booted Torri.

It's like watching a road crash coming straight for you. Even more pathetic are the qualifiers. "Like Jack O'Neill" "Remember Michael Shanks was in his twenties when SG1 started". Shanks was what - 27, 28 in season one. It'll never match up to the original and I don't think I want to see it try.

Yeah, they're saying 'oh Shanks was in his 20's blah blah', yes, but the character of Daniel Jackson was 31. Michael Shanks was 26.

And the difference is the movie sold us a young genius Dr. Jackson that we could believe. That was always my complaint about Atlantis' Keller, they could never sell me on the idea that she had the requisite experience to be the CMO of an expedition like Atlantis. Of course, I was already pissed because they'd killed Becket.

Yes, Shanks was young and he looked young but his talent always carried the day for him.

about for how long it takes to become a doctor;
It typically takes four years of undergraduate school to obtain your Bachelor's, followed by an additional 4 years of medical school and several years of internship before you can use the title of M.D. On average, it can take up to 12 years to reach this goal.

So Keller would have (even if she was smart and advanced quicker)only been practising medicine for only a few years at most before she got the job on Atlantis. I still can't see her placement being justified.

It's All ABout Me!
